From Vision to Venture: Building Your Own Business

Synopsis: 

This lecture provides an essential guide for aspiring entrepreneurs on how to create a successful venture, whether as a startup or a traditional business. We will begin by exploring the key differences between a startup—focused on innovation, scalability, and disruption—and a business, which emphasizes stability, profitability, and established markets. Participants will gain insights into the critical components of building a successful venture, including the development of a strong value proposition, conducting thorough market analysis, and the importance of prototypes. The lecture will also cover key fundraising strategies, ranging from bootstrapping and crowdfunding to attracting investors and venture capital. Additionally, there will be a dedicated focus on exploring grants and investment opportunities, offering practical guidance on identifying, applying for, and leveraging these resources to drive business growth and success.

The Speaker:

Artemis Kontou is a Senior Research Associate at KIOS CoE and a seasoned entrepreneur, with a passion for innovation management and growth. She has co-founded several ventures, including Malloc, a privacy and data security startup that has reached over 1 million global downloads, and is the founder of Tseepor, a developing real estate company focused on creating modern, sustainable projects. Artemis holds two international patents, showcasing her dedication to advancing technology and innovation. She earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London, an MSc in Meteorology, and a BSc in Applied Mathematics. Artemis has held key roles throughout her career, including Research Infrastructure Manager at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, Research Associate at the Shell University Technology Centre of Imperial College London, and Research Associate at Akzo Nobel. Artemis has designed and taught three modules at the University of Cyprus and Cyprus University of Technology. She is a National Delegate for the ISO56001 Innovation Management System series of standards, and an Appointed Member of the Board of Directors of the Nicosia Chamber of Commerce and Industry. With expertise in mentoring startups and creating high-value commercial projects Artemis is committed to empowering others to turn their ideas into thriving ventures.
